Iceland tours geology: Half day tour on the south coast

Iceland tours geology: Iceland tours geology On this half day tour we will visit some main sites close to Reykjavik. Our first stop is Mount Úlfarsfell, situated just outside of Reykjavik. At the top you will experience an amazing view over Reykjavik and the surrounding area, weather permitting.

Our next stop is Hengill volcano and from there we will go to the high-temperature geothermal area, Nesjavellir. Later we will travel through Grafningur, pass the hydro electric power station at Ljósafoss and visit Hveragerði. We will head back to Reykjavik via Hellisheiði. Please wear comfortable and warm clothing, good footware and don´t forget to bring your camera!

MOUNT ÚLFARSFELL

Mount Úlfarsfell is situated between Reykjavík and Mosfellsbær. It is a popular hiking site. The hiking trail is about 4.6 km and on a clear day, the view from the top is magnificent.

HENGILL

Hengill volcano is situated south of the National Park, Þingvellir, and covers an area of about 100 km². Hengill is still an active volcano and is an important source of energy for the south of Iceland, which is captured at the Nesjavellir power station and Hellisheiði power station. Many hiking trails are in the area as well as hot springs.

NESJAVELLIR

The Nesjavellir power station is the second largest geothermal power station in Iceland. It is located 177 m (581 ft) above sea level. It supplies about 25% of the hot water needed for the central heating in Reykjavik. Nesjavellir is a perfect destination for a day tour such as Iceland tours geology.

HVERAGERÐI

The town Hveragerði is loated 45 km to the east of Reykjavik. The surrounding area is a part of Hengill and is gerothermally active and experiences very frequently (but usually minor) earthquakes. It is known as the greenhouse village because the locals grow all kinds of plants in greenhouses thanks to the geothermal activity in the area. Hveragerði is an interesting place to visit on your Iceland tours geology adventure trip, especially if you are interested in hot springs and fumaroles.
